Frequently Asked Questions

You have burning questions and we have answers.

How many boxes of logs it would take to have equivalent BTU output of oak firewood?

Typical hardwood is air dried; is about 20% moisture, and is typically about 20 million BTU/cord. MaineFlame firelogs are a mixture of forest residuals with no additives, it has a similar heating content.

What are the dimensions of a MaineFlame log?

MaineFlame firelogs are approximately 4 in. (90 mm) diameter; 11.8 in. (300 mm) length.

What is the proper way to light the round logs? I bought a pack to test out and I am having no luck getting them to light. Do you put more than 1 log in at a time?

We recommend lighting them like you would a regular large stick of hardwood—because, well, a MaineFlame firelog is a large stick of wood. You’ll need a fire starter (our boxes make it extra sustainable, you green superhero you), fat wood, or kindling to kick off the flames.

What percentage are these logs for hardwood? Or are they all softwood?

Our firelogs are like the ultimate blend of forest leftovers—thanks to the steam process, drying, and densification, we’ve made them so consistent, hardwood and softwood can’t argue about who has the better heat content anymore.

How does this product compare to logs in a wood stove?

MaineFlame firelogs are similar in performance to air-dried hardwood, but with a little extra scruffy swagger.

I am looking for BTUs per log if available. Burn time per log?

MaineFlame firelogs pack a punch—35,000 BTU each. In an open fireplace, they’ll last a couple of hours, perfect for coziness. But tossed in a stove with optimized air flow, they will burn more quickly.

How many cords of normal firewood would one pallet replace?

Approximately one ton of MaineFlame firelogs is equivalent to a typical cord of air-dried firewood.

Approximately what percentage of the firelogs are dried? If I cut one open and stuck my moisture meter into the interior, is it going to be different from a red oak or ash log?

MaineFlame firelogs typically run in the range of 10-12% moisture, which is roughly 6-8% below typical air-dried cord wood, like red oak or ash.

Other firelog manufacturers will use wax and chemical additives to have their firelog burn longer or start easier. We figured out how to do that without all the added junk.
